Brianna Wu, US politician and video game developer, has been embroiled in a controversy after DMs of her "mocking a trans woman and using transphobic slurs" were leaked on social media. Following an outrage, Wu issued a clarification saying the DMs "were selectively chosen to paint a completely false narrative."
It all started when a few DMs showing Wu discussing a trans woman's outfits surfaced on the internet. She was soon slammed by netizens, some of who called her a "miserable transphobe ."
Following the outrage, Wu issued a statement on X saying that the chats that got leaked were painting a completely false narrative.
"Some group DMs got leaked tonight, and were selectively chosen to paint a completely false narrative about me not respecting NB people. If you read our whole group chat you’d see comments from me talking about how I think NB people are experiencing real pain," she wrote.
"And how even though I don’t understand it, they deserve respect. I also said they need more health care. This is why you should be VERY SUSPICIOUS of things selectively edited by people with an axe to grind. They’re not going to show you the parts that don’t fit their agenda," Wu added.
She went on to say that she respects non-binary people and that she will vote for a politician who will give them more right.
A few hours later, she issued another statement, apologising for the word she used to describe the person's outfit.
"I admit I should not have used that word to describe Benny’s outfit in that Onlyfans picture, even privately with some of my closest trans friends. I apologize without reservation. She had been attacking me viciously for days, but even then I should’ve been kinder. I am sorry," she wrote on X.
